This video consists of raw images from Voyager 2, which flew by the planet in August 1989. While studying these images of the surface, scientists discovered Neptune‘s Great Dark Spot and Little Dark Spot. Several years later, the dark spots discovered by the probe disappeared, but new ones appeared in their place. The spots on Neptune are storm vortices in the atmosphere. They are also known as anticyclones. They are accompanied by bright, light companion clouds that form when disturbed atmospheric currents rise above the vortex. These vortices vary greatly. They have different shapes, sizes, stability, and other parameters. Near such objects, wind speeds can reach 2,400 km/h. That’s even faster than the speed of sound!
