Virginia State Senator Louise Lucas, an 82-year-old powerful Democrat from Portsmouth and president pro tempore of the state Senate, surrendered to authorities today after a federal grand jury indicted her and six others on charges including racketeering, conspiracy to distribute marijuana, money laundering, bribery, and maintaining a drug-involved premises.
Prosecutors say Lucas led a family-run operation called the “Lucas Enterprise” that illegally bought and sold large amounts of marijuana while she used her Senate position to protect the business and push for laws that could bring her family more money, with wiretaps capturing her talking about building “generational wealth” and not being “too old to be greedy.”
The case involves her daughters, grandson, and other associates; it follows FBI raids in May on her office and a cannabis shop she co-owns, with the five-year scheme estimated at around $4.5 million in illegal gains, though Lucas has pushed back saying she won’t be intimidated.
