Karmelo Anthony, now 18 years old, was indicted on June 24, 2025, by a Collin County grand jury for first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. The incident occurred on April 2, 2025, during a dispute in the bleachers at a high school track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas. According to reports, the altercation began when Metcalf, a student at Frisco Memorial High School, asked Anthony, a former student at Frisco Centennial High School, to leave the Memorial High School team’s tent. Witnesses stated that Anthony responded by saying, “Touch me and see what happens,” and after Metcalf touched or grabbed him, Anthony allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest. Metcalf died shortly after despite efforts to save him.
Anthony admitted to the stabbing, claiming self-defense, and was arrested at the scene. He has been on house arrest with an ankle monitor since April 14, 2025, after his bond was reduced from $1 million to $250,000. If convicted, Anthony faces 5 to 99 years or life in prison, with a possible fine of up to $10,000. His attorney, Mike Howard, stated that the indictment is a routine step and that Anthony looks forward to presenting a full self-defense case at trial, arguing the prosecution may not eliminate reasonable doubt. No trial date has been set, and the case has drawn significant attention due to issues of race, privilege, and public safety
