President Donald Trump is leading a “counterrevolution” of sorts when it comes to restoring order in America’s international relationships. Here’s the advice Victor Davis Hanson prescribes on today’s episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words”: “ We need to be very careful how we speak. The quieter that we can be, the more effective and more encompassing can be the reforms. And we’re going to try to make sure that we’re not an existential enemy of China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, and an array of anti-Western societies. “ As far as Ukraine, Donald Trump is under all sorts of criticism because he, at first, had a legitimate beef with [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy. … All he has to say is, ‘Vladimir Putin did not invade in my first term. He invaded during Barack Obama’s term and Joe Biden’s term. Even George W. Bush’s term he invaded. It wasn’t I who got us into this mess. We cannot watch aimlessly and helplessly as 1.5 million lives are consumed with death, wounding, capture, missing—these casualties.’”
- VDH is incredible….should be a consultant to any administration
- I think is true for all of us that are Trump supporters. There is no need to fight in the dirt over the failed policies of the last 50 years. Take the high road, be articulate and patient. Keep the pace of change, but be careful with the rhetoric. I needed to hear this today..thanks for the reminder
- It is not often that I disagree with VDH. This may be the first time in fact, but the quiet conservative has been buried in the ground for at least half a century. I would never hang with Trump, but his loudness is at least a counter-balance to what has been going on in America for my 70+ years.
- Thing is, I consider it likely that Trump was reasonable initially, in private, with Canada. His negotiations tend to start with a very reasonable “ let’s all work together” attitude. But I think Trump gets frustrated when he’s lied to, or feels his opponent is blowing smoke. That’s when Trump gets loud, even insulting. It’s how he started with Rocketman. Quiet words got us nowhere, so he went loud.
- Victor, if Trump did this, he might get some moderate Democrats of offer up alternative ideas, but I think the majority of the party which is lockstep with the progressive left will only mock him and have nothing to offer to the conversation that is solution based. I do agree with you Victor that Trump needs to explain in the language you laid out, but he also needs to be aware that language such as this should not diminish the hard-line actions that need to be done. These other entities and nations will stall and will make little to no concessions.
- His nice guy days are over. They literally tried to kill him! He has two years, no time for nice guy. Speak plain and speak truth, he has the stick.
- Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper agreed to step up NATO funding but our failed retired prime minister Trudeau didn’t follow through. “Becky Rasdall Vargas, senior vice president of trade and workforce policy at the International Dairy Foods Association, clarified the issue, stating: “It is accurate that Canada imposes a tariff of approximately 250% on U.S. exports of certain dairy products into Canada. However, that tariff would only apply if we were able to reach and exceed the quota on U.S. dairy exports agreed to under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.” So far, these quotas have never been exceeded, meaning that the higher tariff rates have not actually been applied.” Trump signed the MCUSA deal in 2020 which protects our farmers and the USA has a similar system. So WTH? I like your humble style VHD. Too bad Trump has bad manners. Don’t threaten anything unless you will do it.
- Trump hits all the issues, spot on. He follows through on all his promises. I voted for Trump three times and I’d vote a fourth time if the situation allowed it, but it’s difficult watching Trump undermine his agenda with his bombastic manner and over the top way of putting an issue out there for public consumption. Having said all that, I would take Trump as-is rather than slog though yet another corrupt regime that we’ve lived with the last four years.
- Agreed. Thank you for sharing your wisdom! Professor Mearsheimer years ago spoke at length at the University of Chicago about liberal hegemony and how America’s foreign policy doesn’t want to accept that there are cultures which simply won’t embrace liberal hegemony. Trying to shove this down their throats only makes trying to negotiate with them that much harder. I support President Trump’s agenda. And I also believe like you that to be a bit more reserved on some issues goes a longer way to accomplishing something truly good than trying to goad a response.
