Newsom’s Gun Gift Dilemma: On-Camera Acceptance Meets Off-Camera Rejection

Shawn Ryan gifts Gavin Newsom a California compliant SIG Sauer P365 X-Macro.

California Governor Gavin Newsom appeared delighted on camera when podcast host Shawn Ryan gifted him a SIG Sauer P365 X-Macro handgun during a recent episode of “The Shawn Ryan Show,” recorded in Tennessee. The firearm, described as “California-compliant,” sparked immediate controversy given Newsom’s long history of championing strict gun control measures. In the viral clip, Ryan presented the gun case, saying, “You ready for this?” Newsom laughed, responding, “Is this an actual— I gotta report this gift, man.” Ryan assured him it was compliant, prompting Newsom to chuckle, “This is too cool, the fact that you would give me this. You just want TSA to take this from me, and my a** is arrested at the airport. I’m onto you, man.”
The governor continued, “Brother, this is fabulous. I’m not anti-gun at all. I’m for just some gun safety common sense. I’m challenged by large capacity magazine clips in urban centers, weapons of war sometimes outgunning the police, but otherwise, man, people have a right to bear arms and I got no ideological opposition to that at all.”

Ryan mentioned a connection at SIG Sauer who insisted on getting a gun into Newsom’s hands.
However, the story took a turn off-camera. According to California State Assemblymember Carl DeMaio, Newsom rejected the gift once the recording stopped, fearing it would violate the state’s “convoluted and draconian gun laws” that he himself signed into effect. DeMaio claimed Newsom left the firearm behind in Tennessee, and his team later admitted the laws were so complex they hired legal counsel for a review.
DeMaio issued a pointed statement: “California State Assemblyman Carl DeMaio is offering to help Governor Gavin Newsom to avoid criminal prosecution by formally asking U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and California Attorney General Rob Bonta to provide legal advice to the governor on how to fully comply with the convoluted and draconian gun laws that he has signed into effect.”
DeMaio added, “It would be an absolute shame if Governor Gavin Newsom inadvertently violated one of his anti-gun laws – but the extraordinary hassle he now faces proves not only that he is a hypocrite but that the draconian gun laws he imposed on regular Californians should be scrapped.”
He quipped about the requirements: “First he’ll need a background check, a Firearm Safety Certificate, a DROS submission, a 10-day waiting period, a safe storage affidavit, and don’t forget the special taxes. And that’s before figuring out how to actually get the gun into California without committing a felony under his own rules.”
DeMaio concluded, “I’m asking for the full weight of the DOJ to guide the Governor through the painful, bureaucratic maze he built, because let’s be honest, he needs the help to navigate the mess he created.”
He has sent letters to Bondi and Bonta urging assistance and questioning if Newsom will follow through.
This incident underscores the irony of Newsom’s position. Despite his on-air claims of not being anti-gun, his administration has enacted some of the nation’s toughest firearm regulations. California earns an “A” grade from the Giffords Law Center for its comprehensive laws, including assault weapons bans, universal background checks, extreme risk protection orders, and domestic violence protections.
In September 2023, Newsom signed 23 gun control bills, followed by more in 2024.  Continued Below….

He has also pushed for a 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, proposing to raise the federal gun-buying age to 21, mandate waiting periods, require universal background checks, and ban civilian assault weapons.
To legally possess the gifted pistol, valued at around $700, Newsom must navigate a labyrinthine process. Ryan needs to transfer it to a licensed dealer in Tennessee, who will ship it to a California FFL dealer. Newsom then submits a Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) to the state Department of Justice, undergoes a background check, waits 10 days, obtains a Firearm Safety Certificate (passing a test and demonstration), and provides proof of safe storage device.
As the gift exceeds the $630 limit for state officials, he’ll pay the difference.
His spokesperson, Izzy Gardon, stated this will be the first firearm registered in his name, but did not confirm if the transfer has begun.
Critics like Sam Paredes of Gun Owners of California called it “the height of hypocrisy,” noting Newsom must now endure the same burdens he imposes on others.
“King Newsom is going to have to go through everything that all of the subjects of California, the plebeians, have to go through,” Paredes said.
He accused Newsom of being a “chameleon governor” shifting stances for political ambitions, possibly eyeing a 2028 presidential run.
The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) challenged Newsom to prove his epiphany by halting anti-gun legislation, such as Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel’s war on Glock pistols, and dropping opposition to Second Amendment lawsuits.
CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb remarked, “Gavin has a ways to go before he convinces anyone he has turned over a new leaf on gun rights.”
Shawn Ryan has also faced backlash from gun owners for the interview. Many accused him of being too lenient, allowing Newsom’s claims—such as California having low gun death rates despite high urban crime—to go unchallenged.
One X user wrote, “Shawn, this wasn’t neutrality. It was theater. You gifted Gavin Newsom a gun, smiled, and let him rebrand himself mid-campaign cycle. That’s not ‘both sides.’ That’s cover.”
Others questioned Ryan’s credibility, suggesting he “took a steaming dump on your base.”
During the podcast, Newsom argued that armed citizens increase gun deaths, citing lower rates in strict-law states like California.
Yet, critics point to persistent violence in cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco, where homicides remain high despite regulations.
Political analysts see the acceptance as a signal of “responsible ownership” amid gun safety advocacy, but skeptics view it as performative.
As of July 19, 2025, no updates confirm if Newsom has completed the transfer. The episode highlights tensions between personal rights and policy, with DeMaio’s mockery amplifying calls to scrap the laws. Whether Newsom ultimately claims the gun could shape perceptions of his stance ahead of future elections.
