- 400 years and you cant say ASK, seems like a choice.
- Seeing rappers being paid millions in commercials for some of the biggest corporations is a pretty good barometer of the decay of society.
- Humans are unique in that they actually think with language – it is not that we have a thought and then it becomes language, language is the thought itself. The better your linguistic abilities, the better your thinking abilities.
- The opening narration of Idiocracy literally predicted this.
- Anyone else remember how Jewish record executives sold the idea of Ninjas With Attitude to western societies as the very apex of culture, in a time where we were encouraged to say all the words before the great pivot around 2000? At that point, they pivoted to being horrified that those in mainstream culture were saying the words and culture which they had been pumping into the spotlight for at least 20 years.
- Somewhere around 1995 I was working with a guy who was kind of a regional celebrity sports hero and an armchair philosopher who, during a conversation about this exact thing said “I am sick and tired of the blackening of American culture”. ‘Wow, racist much?’ was my immediate thought as a liberally-minded art major during the Clinton era and this social movement away from the Reagan and Bush America. But now 30 years later, I’m like ‘Yeah, I get it now.’ And judging from the recent proliferation of ‘black fatigue’ in comments sections, I don’t think I’m alone.
- Turns out my middle school teacher was correct. Having some standards is important if you want a shared language. Who knew teachers could ever be correct on matters of society
- I experienced this myself while living in Russia. Among other foreigners, we unconsciously developed a kind of linguistic toddler-speak — a stripped-down, utilitarian version of Russian where nuance went to die. To this day, I still find myself using those Frankenstein phrases. Take the word for “what,” for example. The proper Russian is shto, but many of us opted for the blunt and barky cho — which sounds tougher, like you’re ready to fight someone over a missing potato. So if you wanted to question a Russian, you’d just growl, “Cho?” and hope they were more amused than offended. Of course, the joke was on us. To any actual Russian speaker, it was painfully obvious: we weren’t intimidating — we were linguistically challenged tourists, mispronouncing the easiest word in the language and proudly broadcasting our foreignness like a neon sign that read “Help, I watched Borat once.”
- Although I couldn’t have articulated it as well as BPS has here – I was just a teen at the time – I intuitively knew this was coming since at least the early 90’s. It all comes down to Rap in my mind. That may seem an oversimplification to many, but truly it is the aesthetic and – dare I say – ‘spiritual’ – soundtrack/engine that drives the…ahem…’culture’. It’s what gives the ‘culture’s its swagger. It’s ‘balls’. Almost like a kind of dark magic, like shamans gaining power from Old Gods by singing to them. If Rap and associated music genres and the aesthetic that accompanies them were to somehow be excised and removed from media, advertising, entertainment, etc, and was no longer as ubiquitous in the mainstream as it has been allowed to become, then the accompanying ‘culture’ would whither and die within a generation. Snip the metaphorical ‘balls’…kill the ‘culture’. Time to start singing louder to our own Gods again. Something to think about
- Stupid people saying stupid, and sometimes incomprehensible things, is amusing to a wide swath of the population. When people are disconnected from fundamentals like providing food, water, and energy, they lose purpose and direction. Amusement becomes a primary goal. It’s almost like a sedative. Entertainers become celebrities. All things celebrities do are emulated by their fans. This includes language, lifestyle, tattoos, and general priorities and positions.
