The Silent Genocide: Christians Slaughtered Daily in Africa Amid Media’s Gaza Obsession

In a viral clip shared above, a speaker passionately questions the global focus on Palestine while highlighting the staggering death toll of Christians in Nigeria: “Last year alone, Muslims killed 500,000 Christians in Nigeria. Why are they only talking about Palestine?”

This stark query exposes a grim reality that conservatives have long decried—a relentless campaign of terror against Christians across Africa by Islamist militants, who operate with impunity in nations like Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Mozambique. While the media amplifies every casualty in the Israel-Hamas conflict, the butchering of thousands of African Christians annually receives scant attention, revealing an intense bias that prioritizes anti-Israel narratives over the plight of the world’s most persecuted faith group. As reports from faith-based organizations and U.S. lawmakers underscore, this disparity isn’t accidental; it’s a symptom of a left-leaning media ecosystem that ignores Christian suffering to avoid challenging Islamist extremism or complicating progressive alliances.

Nigeria stands as ground zero for this modern-day genocide, where Boko Haram, Fulani militants, and ISIS affiliates wage a brutal jihad against Christian communities. In 2023 alone, nearly 5,000 Christians were deliberately targeted and killed for their faith, accounting for over 80% of global Christian martyrdoms that year. Open Doors International’s 2024 World Watch List ranks Nigeria as the seventh most dangerous country for Christians, but it’s the deadliest, with militants hacking victims to death, raping women, and displacing entire villages. From January 2023 to January 2024, over 8,000 Christians were killed or abducted, with estimates rising to 800 deaths and 1,000 abductions in the first four months of 2024.

Intersociety, a Nigerian research group, reports that since 2009, more than 52,000 Christians have been “butchered or hacked to death,” alongside the destruction of over 18,500 churches and 2,200 Christian schools. These attacks often occur during worship, with jihadists shouting “Allahu Akbar” as they slaughter families. Recent horrors illustrate the daily terror. In June 2025, Islamist militants massacred up to 200 Christians in Benue State, targeting internally displaced refugees in a Catholic sanctuar. Pope Leo XIV condemned it as a “terrible massacre,” praying for rural Christian communities relentlessly victimized by violence. Just weeks earlier, in May, terrorists killed 20 parishioners in four attacks within 10 days in Bishop Wilfred Anagbe’s diocese, following his congressional testimony on the crisis.

Fulani herdsmen, predominantly Muslim, invade Christian farmlands, claiming territory for grazing while enforcing radical Islam. In Plateau State, Christmas 2023 saw over 140 Christians slaughtered in coordinated raids, with babies injured and homes torched. Rev. Johnnie Moore called it a “Christmas massacre,” lamenting the world’s silence. This bloodshed extends beyond Nigeria to other African nations where Islamist terrorists roam freely. In the DRC, ISIS-aligned Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) beheaded 70 Christians in February 2025, using machetes in a small church in Lubero district. Another attack in July killed 49 worshipers, including nine children, during a prayer vigil.

Open Doors reports 355 Christians killed in the DRC in 2024, up from 261 in 2023. In Mozambique, Islamic insurgents displaced over 1 million since 2017, attacking 12 communities in 2024 alone. Sudan saw 165 churches closed amid civil war, with jihadists imposing strict Islamic laws in the Sahel region (Chad, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso), creating no-go zones for Christians.
Across Sub-Saharan Africa, over 16 million Christians are displaced, facing rape, forced conversions, and death. Yet, these atrocities pale in media coverage compared to the Israel-Gaza conflict. Since October 2023, Palestinian authorities report over 45,000 deaths in Gaza, with UN estimates reaching 62,614 by mid-2025, including indirect casualties.

While tragic, this two-year toll is dwarfed by Africa’s long-term Christian slaughter: over 52,000 in Nigeria since 2009, with annual figures like 4,998 in 2023 far exceeding Gaza’s monthly averages when adjusted for duration

Intersociety claims 100,000 Christians killed in Nigeria since 2009, yet global headlines fixate on Palestine. Why? Conservatives point to media bias that amplifies anti-Israel sentiment while downplaying Islamist violence against Christians. This bias is evident in coverage disparities. When Fulani jihadists massacred 120 Christians in Nigeria in 2019, major outlets like The New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, and MSNBC ignored it entirely. Breitbart noted this “media silence surrounds Muslim massacre of Christians,” contrasting it with wall-to-wall reporting on New Zealand mosque attacks. Rev. Moore argues that for every reported massacre, ten occur in shadows, with ISIS-West Africa killing more Christians than the caliphate in Iraq and Syria combined. Critics slam the Biden administration for removing Nigeria from religious freedom watchlists despite the genocide, attributing it to political correctness.

U.S. lawmakers like Sen. Ted Cruz have introduced bills to combat this, sanctioning Nigerian officials for enabling persecution. The State Department condemns the violence, but conservatives decry the lack of action. The media’s selective outrage stems from a narrative that villainizes Israel while portraying Islamists as victims or ignoring their atrocities. Gaza deaths dominate headlines, fueling protests and UN resolutions, yet African Christians’ plight—women raped, children beheaded, villages razed—elicits yawns.

Hungary’s aid secretary calls for global recognition, but Western outlets prioritize Palestine. This bias, conservatives argue, emboldens terrorists, as lack of scrutiny grants free rein. As the X clip demands, why the silence? With far more Christians dying annually in Africa than in Gaza’s conflict peaks, the answer lies in ideology. Media ignores Christian genocide because it doesn’t fit anti-Western, pro-Islamist agendas. Until this changes, the slaughter continues unchecked.
