That’s California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a likely 2028 presidential candidate, speaking to an undercover journalist while campaigning in New Hampshire.
Asked by a “younger voter” who said “we don’t want Kamala Harris, we want more democratic socialist policies”:
“No one is arguing to manage the status quo and fail more efficiently.”

Gavin Newsom just admitted on hidden camera that the Democratic Socialists of America are taking over the Democratic Party. Here is what the actual DSA members inside the party are saying about it.
California’s governor told an undercover journalist in New Hampshire that the “energy and the desire and demand for bold change, not incremental change, is very much going to be dominant” inside the party and that DSA will be “a mainstream Democratic movement. Absolutely. No question about that.”
He is not guessing. The people Newsom is talking about have already said the same thing out loud.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rejoined the national DSA in August 2026 after her membership had quietly lapsed for seven years. In December 2024 she joined a mass call with roughly a thousand people and told them to join the organization:
“DSA is a political home to take our own power back and organize. Whether it is for the defense of our immigrant neighbors, whether it is organizing workplaces in union drives and campaigns, whether it is the Build Public Renewables Act, or whether it’s organizing tenants unions and fighting for housing laws that protect tenants’ rights. I encourage people to check out a meeting – just come. Isolation is where fascism blooms. Community is where it can be dismantled. We are going to need each other in the next four years. I can’t think of a better thing to be doing.”
She has also described the New York City DSA chapter as “kind of like your local union chapter” while confirming she is a member of it.
Zohran Mamdani, the DSA member who is now mayor of New York City, told a DSA national convention in 2023: “We have a socialist politic. Socialism is our theory, and DSA is our practice.” In his inaugural address he said: “I was elected as a democratic socialist, and I will govern as a democratic socialist. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being deemed radical.”
Rashida Tlaib has publicly identified herself as a DSA member. The organization routinely calls her one of its own. After she was censured in the House, DSA amplified a statement attributed to her urging people to join the group so working people could “wield our power as the working class.”
Bernie Sanders has spent years calling himself a democratic socialist and has been the single biggest recruitment tool DSA has ever had. He has said: “These are my values, and that is why I call myself a democratic socialist.” DSA poured members, money, and door-knockers into both of his presidential runs and treated his platform as its own.
The national DSA platform has included public ownership of major industries, abolishing ICE, open borders as a long-term goal, and ending capitalism itself. Several of the politicians above have backed large pieces of that agenda even when party leadership has tried to keep distance.
Newsom’s private comments line up with what the DSA members inside the Democratic Party have been saying in public for years. The only people still pretending the party is a coalition of moderates are the ones who need the label to stay in power.
