Steve Bannon’s Unyielding Push for Trump 2028: Navigating Constitutional Barriers with Unknown Strategies

Steve Bannon: “President Trump is going to run for third term and President Trump is going to be elected again — on the afternoon of January 20th of 2029, he’s going to be president of the United States.” Bannon said they are trying to figure out a way for Trump to get a third term …. I am all for it …but wouldn’t that give Obama another term, too, if he wants to run ?

In a recent appearance on NewsNation’s “BATYA” show (above) , hosted by Batya Ungar-Sargon, Steve Bannon, the fiery conservative strategist and host of the “War Room” podcast, doubled down on his long-standing assertion that President Donald Trump will seek a third term in 2028. The clip, shared widely on X by user @Real_Ames , captures Bannon responding to a direct question about the 22nd Amendment, which explicitly limits presidents to two elected terms. “I think there are many different alternatives that at the appropriate time after midterms in ’26 we will roll out,” Bannon stated confidently. “But I think there are many different alternatives to make sure President Trump is on the ballot. And if he’s on the ballot, he’ll win.”

This cryptic reference to undisclosed “alternatives” has ignited fresh debate within conservative circles, raising questions about potential legal maneuvers that could challenge or circumvent the Constitution’s clear language on term limits. Bannon’s comments come at a pivotal moment in Trump’s second term, which began in January 2025 following his decisive victory in the 2024 election. With the midterm elections looming in 2026, Bannon’s timeline suggests a strategic rollout of plans that could reshape the Republican Party’s future and test the boundaries of American governance. As a former White House chief strategist who played a key role in Trump’s 2016 upset win, Bannon has never shied away from bold, disruptive ideas. His “War Room” podcast, a staple for MAGA enthusiasts, has become a platform for rallying the base around unorthodox proposals, including this push for Trump 2028.

Bannon’s insistence isn’t new; he has been floating the idea since late 2024, shortly after Trump’s reelection was confirmed. Back in December 2024, during a speech at the New York Young Republican Club gala, Bannon teased the crowd with the notion of a third Trump term, noting that the 22nd Amendment doesn’t explicitly require terms to be consecutive. “It doesn’t actually say consecutive. I don’t know, maybe we do it again in ’28. Are you guys down for that? Trump ’28?” he asked, eliciting cheers from the audience. This line of thinking, while popular among some die-hard supporters, flies in the face of established constitutional interpretation. The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951 following Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four terms, states unequivocally: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

Legal experts across the spectrum agree that this caps any individual at two elections, regardless of consecutiveness. Yet Bannon’s rhetoric taps into a deeper frustration among conservatives who view Trump’s first term as sabotaged by investigations, impeachments, and what they call “deep state” interference. Conservative media outlets have covered Bannon’s provocations extensively, often framing them as a rallying cry rather than a serious legal threat. Newsmax reported on Bannon’s December 2024 remarks, highlighting how he stirred up the crowd and sparked national reaction by suggesting Trump could enter the 2028 race.

The Washington Examiner noted that Bannon, through his “War Room” platform, has repeatedly pushed for this scenario, even as he positions himself as a potential contender in a post-Trump GOP. In one episode, Bannon urged Trump to show “no mercy” in his second term, while slipping in the idea that term limits might not be an insurmountable barrier. These statements align with Bannon’s broader vision of a populist revolution, where traditional norms are challenged to preserve MAGA’s momentum. Speculation about how Bannon’s “alternatives” might work has proliferated in conservative discussions. One popular theory, echoed in replies to the  @Real_Ames X post, involves repealing the 22nd Amendment outright. A user named @KissforKolber outlined a path: “Easy. Repeal the 22nd Amendment. SCOTUS will be outlawing race-based districting, gaining about 25-30 House seats. New Census (2020’s was illegal) should net another 30. Kick ass in the midterms. Need 2/3 House (286) and Senate (67), then 3/4 of States to agree. Trump 2028!”

This scenario, while ambitious, isn’t without precedent in conservative thought. Amending the Constitution requires supermajorities in Congress and ratification by three-quarters of the states—a tall order, but one that could be feasible if Republicans dominate the 2026 midterms as Bannon predicts. Other ideas floating in MAGA circles include more creative loopholes. Some suggest Trump could resign midway through his second term, allowing Vice President JD Vance to ascend and appoint Trump as VP, setting up a 2028 run under the 12th Amendment’s provisions. However, this too clashes with the 22nd Amendment’s spirit and letter. Fox News reported on similar discussions, noting Trump’s own hints at a third term during interviews, where he quipped he’s “not joking” about the possibility.

Yet Trump has also pushed back, telling Fox News in April 2025 that he wouldn’t use “loopholes” to seek another term. This mixed messaging keeps the base energized while allowing plausible deniability. Bannon’s advocacy for Trump 2028 isn’t just about loyalty; it’s a strategic play to maintain control over the Republican Party’s direction. As the Washington Examiner detailed, with Trump’s term limits approaching, a civil war looms between traditional conservatives and national conservatives (NatCons) over issues like economics and foreign policy. Bannon, a NatCon figurehead, sees a third Trump term as a way to solidify populist gains, from trade wars to immigration crackdowns. His “War Room” episodes often frame this as essential to countering what he calls the “uniparty” establishment. In March 2025, Bannon told NewsNation he’s a “firm believer” that Trump will run and win in 2028, emphasizing that “we’re working on it.”

The idea has gained traction in unexpected ways. The official Trump Organization store began selling “Trump 2028” hats in April 2025, fueling speculation as reported by the Washington Examiner. On X, conservative influencers like @MilaLovesJoe amplified Bannon’s message: “Steve Bannon says Trump will run for, and win, a third term. Trump 2028. I want two in a row.” @MilaLovesJoe and @RedLineNewsUSA echoed this, stating Bannon believes Trump will overcome term limits because “we’re working on it.” Even @Breaking911 shared a clip of Bannon’s comments, asking for thoughts and garnering thousands of engagements.

Critics within conservative ranks, however, warn of overreach. Fox News highlighted Democratic fears, like California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s claim that Trump might cancel the 2028 election altogether, but dismissed it as paranoia. Still, some Republicans argue that focusing on 2028 distracts from current priorities. As one X user in the thread noted, “Bannon has gone off the rails here. It’s not happening.” Trump’s unique position—his non-consecutive terms—does give him leverage to avoid lame-duck status, as a Fox News piece on a Washington Post editorial explained. But pushing for a third term risks alienating moderates and inviting legal battles. Bannon’s vision extends beyond Trump; it’s about institutionalizing MAGA. In a July 2025 “War Room” discussion, he tied Trump’s legacy to successors like Vance, but insisted on extending Trump’s influence.

This aligns with his broader attacks on perceived enemies, from Big Tech to the media. As conservatives gear up for 2026, Bannon’s “alternatives” could involve lobbying for constitutional changes or leveraging Supreme Court rulings on election laws. Whether through repeal, reinterpretation, or other means, his insistence challenges the status quo. Ultimately, Bannon’s push for Trump 2028 embodies the unapologetic spirit of modern conservatism: bold, defiant, and willing to rewrite rules for victory. While the Constitution stands as a formidable barrier, history shows that determined movements can shift paradigms. As Bannon himself might say, if Trump’s on the ballot, the rest is history.
