From 2010 to 2021, over 26,000 pharmacies shut down—almost 1 in 3 nationwide. Closures hit Black, Latino, and low-income White neighborhoods the hardest, especially where people rely on Medicaid and Medicare. Independent drugstores were more likely to vanish, often excluded from insurance networks and crushed by shrinking reimbursements. This means fewer places for shots, birth control, and overdose care — in places that already had the fewest options.
