Where’s the data justifying this?” Brecka, a health expert, points to a disturbing trend: in 1988, as a high school graduate, he didn’t know a single autistic child. Today, his 16-year-old daughter, a high school sophomore, knows 10 peers with autism, including one with mild Asperger’s. CDC data confirms the surge—1 in 150 kids in 2000, now 1 in 36. ADHD rates are climbing too. What’s driving this crisis? Brecka challenges the rush to vaccinate newborns for diseases they’re unlikely to encounter early on. “You can quantify any risk,” he says. “There’s a chance of dying in a car accident on the way to school, but we don’t stop driving kids.
