Four years ago, North Carolina voters handed Democrats both a crushing defeat and a major win. Trump squeaked past Biden by just 1 point, but Democrat Governor Roy Cooper was re-elected and has since been a thorn in the side of the Republican-led legislature.

Now, with the next election around the corner, things are heating up again. Trump and Kamala Harris are flooding North Carolina with ads and rallies. Meanwhile, the race to replace term-limited Cooper is favoring Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein, who’s up against Republican Mark Robinson. Stein’s camp is blitzing the airwaves with ads targeting Robinson’s controversial comments and a sketchy daycare he once ran. Robinson’s support from his own party is lukewarm, with big names like Sen. Thom Tillis refusing to endorse him.

Even though Stein is leading in the polls, North Carolina is known for nail-biting close elections, so it’s not over yet. Democrats are banking on Stein’s solid record as AG and his focus on the economy, while Republicans hope Robinson’s stance on parental rights in schools will pull him through. Still, as one Republican strategist put it, “Our base comes home when it’s decision time.”

Historically, North Carolina voters like to split their tickets. They’ve backed Republicans for president but rarely for governor. Recent polls show Stein with a double-digit lead among women, while Robinson is leaning heavily on his Trump endorsement.

The governor’s race might come down to whether Robinson’s past controversial remarks, which range from anti-LGBTQ comments to conspiracy theories, turn off moderate voters. Stein is playing it cool, focusing on schools and jobs, while Robinson defends his personal story of growing up in poverty and overcoming adversity.

So, will the voters in North Carolina go with the steady AG or the firebrand lieutenant governor? Stay tuned – this is going to be a close one! – At least according to the Left.
