Federal authorities caught a terrorist from the Somali terror group al-Shabaab illegally crossing the U.S. southern border and released him into the country, where he roamed freely for nearly a year before being arrested in Minnesota.
The individual was initially deemed a “mismatch” by the Terrorist Screening Center after being caught near San Ysidro, California, on March 13, 2023, but later confirmed as a member of al-Shabaab involved in explosives or firearms on January 18, 2024.
Border Patrol caught 172 terror watchlist suspects attempting to enter the U.S. illegally during fiscal year 2023.

The background checks primarily focus on criminal history within the United States, not international records, which can delay identifying potential threats.
An estimated 860,000 individuals entered the U.S. illegally without apprehension in 2023.
The U.S. government has designated Al-Shabaab as a foreign terrorist organization since 2008, highlighting the group’s operations in Somalia and attacks in Kenya and Uganda.
U.S. forces conducted a defensive air strike against three al-Shabaab terrorists on January 21 at the Somali government’s request.
Al-Shabaab is responsible for bombings, assassinations, and attacks, including the 2013 Westgate mall attack in Nairobi and the 2017 bombings in Mogadishu.

Two days after ICE arrested this terrorist in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Al-Shabaab is a Sunni Islamic terrorist group that publicly pledged loyalty to al-Qa’ida.
