On MSNBC’s show “Morning Joe,” host Joe Scarborough recently asked Democratic Congressman Jamie Raskin from Maryland a tough question. He wanted to know why Democrats didn’t push to release secret files about Jeffrey Epstein when they were in charge of the Department of Justice (DOJ) during President Joe Biden’s time in office from 2021 to 2025. Epstein was a wealthy businessman who was arrested in 2019 for serious crimes like sex trafficking young girls. He died in jail that same year, and many people think his death was suspicious. His case involves famous people, and there’s been a lot of talk about hidden documents that might name who was connected to him.
This conversation has gotten a lot of attention because it highlights how both political parties have handled the Epstein mystery over time. Scarborough pointed out that Democrats controlled the DOJ and even Congress for part of Biden’s presidency, so they could have demanded the files be made public. He said, “You could’ve had them from ’21 to ’25 when Democrats controlled DOJ. Why? It was a crisis then, it’s a crisis now.”
Raskin seemed unsure and didn’t give a clear answer at first. He mentioned that there were other big issues going on, like legal cases against former President Donald Trump. Then, he shifted the blame to Trump, saying Trump was close friends with Epstein and there are photos of them together.

Scarborough is known for criticizing Trump a lot, so it was unusual for him to challenge a Democrat like this. Conservatives noticed and thought it was a big deal.
The timing is interesting because there’s fresh buzz online about Epstein’s connections. For example, last month, billionaire Elon Musk (who owns X, formerly Twitter) claimed Trump was on an “Epstein list” of clients or friends. But Epstein’s old lawyer quickly said that’s not true—Trump isn’t in any official documents as a client or close associate.
Even with that denial, people keep demanding all the Epstein files be released. Many Democrats and commentators are pushing for this, but they’re mostly blaming Trump’s team, even though the files were under Biden’s DOJ for years without much action.
Critics say Democrats missed their chance to act when they had power. Adding to the story, in July 2025, the DOJ and FBI released a memo saying there’s no official “client list” from Epstein’s files, and they confirmed he really did take his own life—pushing back against conspiracy theories. But the drama hasn’t stopped. Musk keeps mocking Trump online, asking where the list is and saying powerful people want it hidden. Some Republicans, like Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and former Vice President Mike Pence, are breaking with Trump and calling for the full release of the files. Trump has called the whole thing a “hoax” and even lashed out at his own supporters who want answers, saying he doesn’t want their support if they’re “weaklings.”
The Epstein case stays controversial because some court papers have been unsealed over the years, naming people like politicians and celebrities, but not everything is out yet. No full, proven list exists, and it shows how hard it is for the government to be transparent about big scandals.
