Texas Democrats, desperate to block the measure, fled the state in a dramatic quorum-breaking stunt, only to return defeated after weeks of futile protests.

Governor Greg Abbott, a staunch conservative, threatened to push for even more Republican seats—up to eight—if the absconding lawmakers didn’t comply, labeling their tactics as “cartoonishly dumb.” This bold strategy, endorsed by Vice President JD Vance, reflects a new aggressive GOP posture: no more playing defense against Democratic gerrymandering in states like California, New York, and Illinois.
