India’s Oil Windfall: Bankrolling Putin’s Brutal Assault on Ukraine While Trump Takes a Stand

Before the war in Ukraine, less than 1% of India’s oil came from Russia. Now it is 42%. The system is allowing India to profiteer by buying cheap Russian oil, reselling it, and pocketing $16B in excess profits. This opportunistic arbitrage is unacceptable.

In a bold call-out on CNBC (clip is above), Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent laid bare the inconvenient truth: Before Russia’s savage invasion of Ukraine, India imported less than 1% of its oil from Moscow. Today, that figure has skyrocketed to a staggering 42%, turning India into one of the Kremlin’s top lifelines amid Western sanctions. “The system is allowing India to profiteer by buying cheap Russian oil, reselling it, and pocketing $16B in excess profits,” Bessent declared. “This opportunistic arbitrage is unacceptable.” And he’s spot on—India’s actions aren’t just shrewd business; they’re directly funding Vladimir Putin’s war machine, prolonging the bloodshed in Ukraine. As President Donald Trump ramps up tariffs to curb this betrayal, it’s clear: America First means holding enablers accountable, and Trump is right to lead the charge.

The numbers don’t lie. Since Putin’s unprovoked aggression began in February 2022, India has gorged on discounted Russian crude, with imports surging from a paltry 68,000 barrels per day to over 1.1 million barrels daily by mid-2025. That’s a mind-boggling increase, making Russia India’s largest oil supplier and accounting for more than 40% of New Delhi’s total imports. Conservative analysts have hammered this point home: India’s purchases have injected tens of billions into Russia’s coffers, offsetting the bite of U.S. and European sanctions designed to starve the invasion of funds. As Breitbart reported, India’s state-owned refineries have been snapping up Russian oil at bargain-basement prices, refining it, and flipping it to Western markets—including the U.S. and Europe—for hefty markups.

This isn’t free-market ingenuity; it’s war profiteering that keeps Russian tanks rolling and missiles flying over Ukrainian cities. Under the weak-kneed Biden administration, this farce went unchecked. While American taxpayers shelled out billions in aid to Ukraine, India played both sides, boosting its two-way trade with Russia to nearly $65 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year—largely fueled by energy deals. Newsmax highlighted how India’s crude imports from Russia hit record highs, with volumes doubling month-over-month in the war’s early days. By 2023, Russia supplied 40% of India’s oil, dwarfing contributions from traditional partners like the U.S., UAE, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia combined. And let’s not forget the resale racket: India refines cheap Russian crude into products like diesel and jet fuel, then exports them to sanction-hit Europe, pocketing billions in “excess profits” while undermining the very embargoes meant to cripple Putin.
This duplicity extends beyond oil. India has deepened its “strategic partnership” with Russia, importing military hardware that bolsters Moscow’s capabilities—even as Ukrainian forces battle Russian aggression. About 60% of India’s military systems are Russian-origin, and New Delhi has resisted calls to condemn the invasion outright. As Fox News noted, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visits to Moscow—his first since the war started—underscored this cozy relationship, with trade exploding amid the conflict. Meanwhile, conservative voices like Sen. Lindsey Graham have praised Trump’s tough stance, noting that slapping tariffs on India is the “only way” to force change and prevent further invasions. Enter President Trump, the peace president who’s finally putting America—and Ukraine—first. Trump didn’t mince words: He’s “very angry” with Putin and has threatened 100% tariffs on all Russian oil buyers if the war doesn’t end.
Starting with India, he signed an executive order imposing a 25% additional tariff as a “secondary” penalty on Russia, effective August 27, 2025, with potential hikes to 50% or more. The Washington Times detailed how this move targets India’s opportunism head-on, adding unspecified penalties for fueling the war. Trump’s advisor Peter Navarro drove the point home: India’s buys are “funding Moscow’s war in Ukraine and have to stop.” As National Review emphasized, Trump doesn’t have endless leverage, but defunding Putin’s war via tariffs on enablers like India is a high-priority strike. Trump’s strategy is already yielding results. Reports from Breitbart show India’s crude imports from the U.S. surging 51% under pressure to ditch Russia. And as Fox News covered, Trump’s tariffs rattled the Kremlin, with Zelenskyy’s aide thanking him for the move.
This isn’t protectionism for its own sake—it’s America First economics weaponized against tyrants. While Biden dithered, allowing India to pocket $16 billion in profits from reselling Russian oil, Trump is wielding tariffs to squeeze Putin’s customers and force peace. Critics whine about “tension” in U.S.-India ties, but let’s be real: Strategic partnerships cut both ways. India can’t claim ally status while bankrolling our adversaries. As Rubio blasted, absolute distrust of Putin demands action, and Trump’s the only leader brokering talks while arming Ukraine and punishing enablers. National Review nailed it: Oil from democracies beats oil from dictatorships, and Trump’s moves prevent a “third invasion” by hitting where it hurts. India’s near-sole support for Russian aggression—through oil buys that now eclipse even China’s in some metrics—has prolonged this nightmare. But with Trump back in charge, the free ride ends. His tariffs aren’t just economic—they’re a moral stand against profiteers who let Ukraine bleed. Trump is right: End the arbitrage, or face the consequences. America leads, and the world follows.
