Did Donald Trump troll Canada into reigniting a dormant nationalism? Victor Davis Hanson argues that Trump’s rhetoric has greatly impacted Canadian politics and suggests ways to resolve these tensions between them and America, including tariff adjustments and military collaborations in the Arctic. “That whole [Liberal] Party was headed toward defeat when Donald Trump started to troll them—’Art of the Deal’—sort of goad them in bombastic style that they should be the 51st state in the union of the United States. … And the result is that a Conservative politician, Pierre Poilievre, may lose the election. … We’ve got to correct that. “ All Canada has to do is lower its tariffs on certain American products and get the surplus down from $50 to $20 billion. … But right now, our closest friend is becoming one of our frenemies, if not one of our enemies, and it should stop as quickly as possible.”
- We need more than “at current levels”. All these politicians bragging about”we didn’t raise it” is a joke. Time to CUT, CUT, CUT
- Why don’t the reporters understand that record keeping is a must!!!! A family that can’t keep a check book balanced is failing.
- He’s cutting 99% of funds that are being wasted. Good on him.
- The sooner everyone understands that as a country we are living way beyond our means the better. Just because we have been living beyond our means does not mean we should continue. Both sides of the isle are responsible for this. Why can’t we see this and simply solve it. It’s very simple, if government and it’s citizens lived below their means we would not have an issue would we?
- It’s unfair that Americans are suffering the consequences and bearing the burden of wasteful spending and unnecessary projects they did not approve!
- Tax policy needs to be modified in some way – but the main issue here is spending (long run). And in large part, the value of federal spending has become an issue b/c of the spending on debt/interest. Current tax proposal equates to a cut in federal revenue by about $500 billion per year (4.5t over 10 years). In 2025, we are running a $2t annual deficit. You cannot tax your way out of this hole. Even if you did not renew the TCJA (and dealt with the fiscal ramifications to consumption/spending/investment, etc.) we are still talking about a massive fiscal hole. I understand taxation could potentially be part of the solution – but the amount of money that is spent on debt is crushing us. This is a cyclical issue if nothing else changes. Deficit spending = more borrowing = more interest on debt = growing deficit = growing interest payments on debt. This is a fiscal cliff and its not far away. I cannot understand how 30 years of politicking has put us in this position. We need to stabilize our spending, and we need to put into place policies which encourage growth, and incentivize the replacement of public spending, with private spending (this does not mean privatizing government functions – this means decreasing economic reliance on government spending, which has risen wildly in the last 20 years.)
