A civilian jet has achieved an aviation milestone, breaking the sound barrier for the first time during a test flight over the Mojave Desert in California.
History in the making. On Jan. 28, 2025, XB-1 officially broke the sound barrier. Flying Mach 1.122 (652 KTAS) at 35,290 ft. over the Mojave Desert, Boom’s supersonic demonstrator jet ushered in a new era of supersonic flight.
- I’ve got a few questions here. If the purpose was to study the effects of their sonic boom reduction design, what the heck is that T38 doing flying right off the wingtip of the SB1? Not only that, but there was a 3rd plane in that flight, the one taking a video of the XB1 and T38 as it went past mach 1.
- So how loud was the sonic boom on the ground? Isn’t one of the design goals to reduce the sound? I’m seeing nothing about this in today’s coverage.
