• It’s not just the polio vaccine that can cause Guillain-Barré syndrome. When I worked in healthcare, a coworker got his annual flu shot and was paralyzed from the waist down with Guillain-Barré. • My mom was one of the first recipients of the polio vaccine in 1955, and she got a mild case of polio with some paralysis in her leg, which she had until the day she died 3 years ago. It was called “The Cutter Incident” and 200,000 children in the US were vaccinated with the very first polio vaccine using what they thought was a deactivated live virus.
