The Anti-Aging Power Of Spermidine: Spermidine’s Role in Cellular Health

Article on Spermidine is below this top vid by Dave Asprey 🛑

In this episode of “The Human Upgrade,” you will learn from Dr. Elizabeth Yurth, an expert in orthopedics, cellular medicine, and regenerative medicine, about the significant health benefits of spermidine, a supplement that enhances longevity and supports robust health. Dr. Yurth discusses the crucial role of spermidine in promoting autophagy, the body’s natural process for clearing out damaged cells, which can lead to better cellular health and a more youthful body. She also dives into how spermidine supports kidney health and how it can be combined with NAD to maximize anti-aging effects. Additionally, you will discover practical tips from Dr. Yurth on integrating these powerful supplements into your daily routine to maintain energy levels, improve cellular function, and sustain a vigorous and healthy life as you age. This episode provides deep insights into making informed choices about supplements that support long-term health goals.

Unlocking Longevity: Spermidine’s Role in Autophagy and Optimal Health

In a recent video on his channel (above), biohacker and Bulletproof founder Dave Asprey dives into the transformative power of spermidine, a natural compound he’s hailed as a game-changer for cellular rejuvenation and anti-aging. Asprey, known for pushing the boundaries of human performance, explains how spermidine triggers autophagy—the body’s self-cleaning process that eliminates damaged cells and promotes renewal—potentially adding years to your life while sharpening mental clarity and boosting energy. He shares personal anecdotes and cites emerging research, positioning spermidine as a must-have supplement for anyone serious about hacking their biology. But what exactly is this molecule, and why is it generating buzz in health circles? Backed by scientific studies, spermidine emerges as a potent ally in combating age-related decline, with profound effects on autophagy and overall wellness.

Spermidine is a naturally occurring polyamine found in various foods like wheat germ, soybeans, aged cheese, and mushrooms. It’s essential for cellular functions, including DNA stability and protein synthesis. As we age, spermidine levels decline, correlating with increased disease risk and reduced lifespan.  I’ve used it off and on now for two years. I’ve found that if I do a fast for longer than 24 hours, I can feel a difference in energy levels and if my fast extends to 3 days (I try to do this once a month to clean out the whole body) , Spermidine does make me feel even better, cleaner.  The specific supplement I use will be noted below. it is not the same brand Dave promotes.

The Brand I have used now for 2 years

HUMANX Spermidine+ (USA Third Party Tested) – Spermidine-Rich Wheat Germ Extract & Zinc to Activate Cellular Renewal – Non-GMO, Spermidine Capsules – Supports Healthy Aging – Spermidine Supplement

Supplementation aims to restore these levels, mimicking caloric restriction’s benefits without the hunger. A key mechanism is its induction of autophagy, the process where cells recycle dysfunctional components, preventing accumulation of cellular debris that leads to inflammation and degeneration. Autophagy is like a cellular detox, and spermidine acts as a switch, enhancing this cleanup to promote longevity and vitality. Research underscores spermidine’s autophagy-boosting prowess. A 2018 study in Science reviewed how spermidine induces autophagy across species, extending lifespan in yeast, flies, worms, and mice while reducing age-related pathologies in humans.

It works by inhibiting acetyltransferases, allowing autophagy genes to activate, leading to improved mitochondrial function and reduced oxidative stress. A 2024 Nature Cell Biology paper revealed spermidine is crucial for fasting-induced autophagy, with its depletion blocking longevity benefits in models like yeast and mice. This ties into Asprey’s advocacy for intermittent fasting, amplified by spermidine for deeper cellular repair. Health benefits extend beyond anti-aging. Cardiovascularly, spermidine promotes cardioprotective autophagy, reducing hypertension and heart failure in animal models, as shown in a 2017 Circulation Research study. It delays brain aging by clearing protein aggregates linked to neurodegeneration, improving cognitive function in aged mice per a 2020 Aging study.

Human trials are promising: A 2024 safety study in Nutrition Research found 40 mg/day spermidine well-tolerated, with minimal effects on tissue levels but potential for broader benefits at higher doses. An exploratory clinical trial on ClinicalTrials.gov examines spermidine’s multi-level molecular effects on aging, focusing on autophagy markers in participants. Spermidine also synergizes with rapamycin for enhanced autophagy and longevity, as a 2024 Autophagy study demonstrated in yeast. Dietary sources include fermented foods, but supplements like wheat germ extract provide concentrated doses, as Asprey recommends. While generally safe, consult professionals, especially with medications. Spermidine represents a frontier in biohacking, empowering individuals to optimize health through autophagy. As Asprey’s video inspires, embracing this compound could redefine aging, offering vitality in a world of stressors.

The only bad thing about this supplement is there are others that do similar if not more for you. One I’ve written about before. See: Health Benefits of Timeline’s Mitopure Urolithin A – This is a serious game-changer to help you live longer.  This is why I use Spermidine when I cycle off Mitopure’s product, as it is always good to NOT use supplements every day or week.  I like to cycle in and out – since we really never know everything about our bodies and health. There is always new info just being discovered, so as far as I’m concerned, allowing the body to adjust and do more itself is optimal.  Also far less expensive as all of these damn supplements add up in cost. You would have to be very wealthy to take them all.
