Boy Thwarts Sister’s Kidnapping with Slingshot …He’s not being sued? May 10, 2023 Alpena Township, Michigan Facts: On May 10, 2023, at around 4:00 p.m., 13-year-old Owen Burns heard his eight-year-old sister scream while she was mushroom hunting in their backyard in Alpena Township. Owen, playing a video game, looked out a window and saw a 17-year-old stranger attempting to abduct her. Owen grabbed his $3 slingshot, loaded it with a marble and a rock, and fired both at the assailant from the window. He struck the suspect in the head and chest, allowing his sister to escape and run back into their home on Ogontz Road.

The assailant, Noah Lee Adkins (17 at the time), fled into nearby woods and was arrested at a gas station on M-32, showing injuries consistent with slingshot strikes. Adkins confessed to planning to severely beat Owen’s sister and pleaded guilty on December 18, 2023, to one count of attempted kidnapping-child enticement and one count of attempted assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. Adkins was sentenced on January 23, 2024, in Alpena County to a minimum of 13 months and a maximum of 5 years in prison. He was paroled on June 17, 2025, after serving approximately 25 months, including time credited from his May 2023 arrest. No injuries were reported to Owen’s sister, and Adkins’ injuries were non-life-threatening. As of August 22, 2025, Adkins is a parolee under supervision until his maximum discharge date of June 17, 2027, with conditions including no contact with victims or minors, prohibitions on alcohol and drugs, mental health treatment, and compliance with parole agent directives.
