Trump’s Renewed Push for Term Limits: Reviving the Fight Against DC Corruption

President Trump just posted this on Truth Social, advocating for term limits of uniparty politicians who have been in office for over 30 years. This further exposes the insanity of the radical left’s “No Kings” movement. Congress is just hospice with better amenities. – Laura Loomer
In a pointed Truth Social post shared by investigative journalist Laura Loomer on July 30, 2025 (Above), President Donald J. Trump highlighted the stark contrast between his own brief tenure in government and the decades-long “reigns” of entrenched Washington insiders. The post, which quickly garnered over 33,000 likes and thousands of reposts, listed veteran politicians like Chuck Grassley (50+ years), Joe Biden (48+ years), Chuck Schumer (44+ years), Mitch McConnell (40+ years), Nancy Pelosi (38+ years), and Bernie Sanders (34+ years), juxtaposed against Trump’s mere “4 years and 5 months.” Trump declared, “No kings!!!” while sarcastically noting the irony of critics labeling him a “king” amid the left’s “No Kings” movement. This message shows Trump’s long-standing advocacy for congressional term limits as a key weapon against corruption in DC, a theme central to his “Drain the Swamp” mantra.
Trump’s support for term limits isn’t new. During his 2016 campaign, he pledged to push for a constitutional amendment imposing limits on members of Congress—six years for House representatives and 12 years for senators.

In a Gettysburg speech that year, he explicitly called for such reforms to curb career politicians. Although this promise went unfulfilled in his first term due to congressional resistance, Trump reiterated his stance in 2018 and again in recent months as president in his second term. In April 2025, amid discussions of his own potential third term (which would require amending the 22nd Amendment), Trump emphasized that congressional limits remain a priority to prevent the very “monarch-like” entrenchment he decries. His administration has backed GOP-led bills in the 119th Congress, including proposals from lawmakers like Rep. Ralph Norman, who supports a constitutional amendment for term limits.

The broader term limits movement in the United States has deep roots, tracing back to the nation’s founding. The Articles of Confederation imposed limits on delegates, but the Constitution omitted them for Congress, leaving only presidential restrictions via the 22nd Amendment in 1951, ratified after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four terms. The modern push surged in the early 1990s, fueled by public frustration with gridlock and scandals. U.S. Term Limits (USTL), founded in 1992, became the movement’s flagship organization, spearheading grassroots campaigns that led to term limits on congressional delegations in 23 states by 1995.

Politicians say term limits stifle experience. Yeah, like we need more “experience” in gridlock and golfing on taxpayer dime!

However, the Supreme Court struck these down in U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton, ruling that states couldn’t impose qualifications beyond those in the Constitution. Undeterred, USTL has continued advocating for a federal amendment, claiming it as “the largest grassroots movement in American history.” Today, public support hovers around 82%, cutting across party lines: 76% of Democrats, 89% of Republicans, and 83% of Independents favor it. Proponents argue that term limits are essential to combating corruption in Washington. Long-serving politicians often amass undue influence, fostering environments ripe for insider trading, lobbying abuses, and cronyism. For instance, members of Congress have been criticized for profiting from stock trades based on non-public information, with recent scandals highlighting figures like Nancy Pelosi, whose family trades have drawn scrutiny. A 2025 bill to ban such trading for lawmakers, the president, and vice president faced White House lobbying against it, underscoring the entrenchment issue.

Studies suggest term limits reduce corruption by limiting tenure, which curbs the accumulation of power that enables graft. Research from the University of Chicago indicates that shorter terms encourage fresh ideas and accountability, as incumbents can’t rely on name recognition and donor networks indefinitely. In states with gubernatorial or legislative limits, corruption convictions have declined, with one analysis showing a 15% increase in corruption incidence under limits but a decrease in severity, as politicians have less time to build corrupt networks. Critics, however, warn that limits could exacerbate issues by empowering unelected bureaucrats or lobbyists, who gain expertise while lawmakers cycle out.

Term limits for Congress? Nah, they’ve already mastered the art of “eternal youth” – it’s called Botox and bribery.

Yet, the Heritage Foundation argues that without limits, reelection rates exceed 95% despite Congress’s abysmal 20% approval rating, perpetuating a “permanent political class.” Enter the MAGA movement—Trump’s fervent base of “Make America Great Again” supporters—who could be the catalyst for change. MAGA enthusiasts, often vocal on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), overwhelmingly back term limits as part of draining the swamp. Recent posts from users like @ItsMagaTime2025 and @zompocs echo this sentiment, calling for investigations into wealth accumulation by figures like Mitch McConnell (net worth $95 million on a $193,400 salary) and bundling limits with stock trading bans.
Polls show MAGA aligns with broader Republican support, with 89% favoring limits.

In the 2025 Congress, MAGA-aligned lawmakers like Rep. Eli Crane and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna have pushed discharge petitions to force votes on related reforms, signaling grassroots pressure. X discussions reveal MAGA users viewing term limits as a way to purge “RINOs” (Republicans In Name Only) and align Congress with America First policies. But can MAGA make it happen? Implementing term limits requires a constitutional amendment: two-thirds approval in both congressional chambers, followed by ratification by three-fourths of states. This path is daunting—Congress has historically resisted self-imposed limits, as seen in failed 1990s efforts.

Trump’s influence could sway GOP majorities, especially with his second-term momentum. MAGA’s electoral power, demonstrated in primaries ousting incumbents, might pressure lawmakers through threats of “term limits at the ballot box.” USTL proposes a convention of states under Article V, bypassing Congress, with 19 states already on board as of 2025. Challenges persist: opposition from establishment figures like Sen. Susan Collins, who voted against Trump nominees, highlights intra-party divides. Bipartisan buy-in is slim, with Democrats wary of reforms that could disrupt their own long-serving members. Despite hurdles, the momentum is building. Trump’s July 2025 post, amplified by Loomer and MAGA voices, has reignited debate amid scandals like the Epstein files and stock trading controversies.

If MAGA mobilizes—through petitions, primaries, and public pressure—it could force a reckoning. As one X user put it, “America is MAGA not GOP,” emphasizing the movement’s potential to transcend party lines. Term limits wouldn’t eliminate corruption overnight, but they could dismantle the “hospice with better amenities” that Congress has become, as Loomer aptly described. With Trump’s bully pulpit and MAGA’s grassroots energy, 2025 might mark the turning point in this decades-long battle.
