Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned Indo-Pacific allies that China is actively rehearsing to take Taiwan by force, calling the threat “real” and potentially “imminent.” Pete Hegseth, U.S. Defense Secretary: “We are not going to sugarcoat it — the threat China poses is real. And it could be imminent… China is no longer just building up its military forces to take Taiwan, it’s actively training for it, every day.” Speaking at Singapore’s Shangri-La security conference, Hegseth noted China’s 2027 deadline to be militarily capable of taking Taiwan. He also called out Beijing’s ambitions in Latin America, particularly its efforts to control the Panama Canal. The U.S. is developing space-based “Golden Dome” missile defenses to counter China’s hypersonic weapons and militarized South China Sea islands. Hegseth urged regional allies to boost defense spending to 5% of GDP, matching new European targets. China snubbed the conference by not sending its defense minister. “We are here this morning.
