If not for that Treaty, Japan would be doing more than just contribute. It could be yet again, a threat due to how efficient the Japanese are if not restricted decades ago. In exchange of Japan not being a superpower as it was before, The US pledges to defend it and be the sole hegemon in the pacific until China and Russia rose to power. That is not unfair. The US shot itself in the foot by agreeing with such unilateral obligation so they cannot whine.
