- This is not so much about the tariff but about Trump actually making reality of the threat towards Canada. Canada played games and now they got the tariff.
- As Americans we need to stop expecting no gains without pain. Our country is literally in shambles, we are 38+ trillion dollars on debt, minus our government guaranteed programs. Our leaders for the last 40+ years have been steadily destroying our production capabilities, all for personal payouts from other industry CEOs. Our country is literally running on the printing of money. In order to ACTUALLY SAVE this country, we have to expect pain and hard times, but that is what people do for their offspring. It’s literally what our parents and grandparents did EVERY SINGLE DAY KF THEIR LIVES. STOP EXPECTING YOUR LIFE TO BE EASY, LIFE IS SUPPOSED TO BE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. That’s how people and countries get and stay built
- That’s why Honda and Toyota are building factories in the USA. The Japanese are smart. They make money, USA makes money, everyone wins
- Average middle class people can’t afford a new vehicle after Bidinomics. 40% increase in vehicle prices in just 4 years.
- As a guy who lives in a car manufacturing town that has overproduced for over a decade and hasn’t been selling to the point of them just stocking empty stadiums with cars in order to give the APPEARANCE of success (the brands include Nissan, Toyota and Hyundai for the record), let me just say that this tariff isn’t going to hurt anyone other than these companies. And I shouldn’t have to say how I feel about these companies.
- One other aspect to the automobile tariffs is that many foreign manufacturers already manufacture in the US. Some models they only import, some models they manufacture in the US. It’s likely they will boost the US production models and import fewer overseas only models. This is a big win for American workers.
- Well, the only reason people buy imports, is because they are cheaper than American cars at the same level of quality. If we are forced to buy American, then we will be paying more. A regular old pickup truck shouldn’t cost $50,000. If he doesnt get rid of income tax, to give us some relief, then things will get better. Tim is an idiot if he thinks this will make things cheaper.
- As a Canadian and as a religious American truck buyer for over 22 years now, if the Canadian auto manufacturing leaves I will never buy another American vehicle again. If Canada puts counter tarrifs on US vehicle imports, our vast fleets of mostly Ford work vehicles which Canada has millions of industrial fleet vehicles probably will be replaced by Toyotas or other imports.
- What is an American car? There’s no such thing anymore. Parts come from all over the world. For Mercedes, 1/3 of the parts are from Germany, 1/3 from North America and 1/3 from the world. The assembly plants are in Alabama. Ford, GM and Chrysler have very few parts from the US and the plants are in Canada and Mexico.
- One of the other things that people are not talking about is the tariff is money staying in the United States and can be used for lowering income tax and other expenses needed. Instead of all the money leaving the country
- One major problem with car companies here is that the people in charge are completely blind to reality. What they say people want is usually the opposite of what is happening. Another idiocy is they will say “manual cars are dead” while not offering one or making it the highest trim level to reduce the sales. Look at the supra manual transmission sales/debacle.
- As a Canadian – I have stood by since 2016 and have been a steady Trump supporter (even though I can’t vote) – but it is getting harder to do. Canada is not the enemy – for fux sake. Of course there are a bunch of woke idiots here – but overall – we are like a sister country to the US.
- The Other Side: Corporate press is correct (for a change). As a consumer, I should have access to the safest, most reliable car I can afford. If I want to buy a 4Runner, one of the best made vehicles on the planet, why should I be punished? And don’t say, “it’s the company that incurs the cost. They’ll either pass the cost onto the consumer or they stop importing the car to the US. And cats are already crazy expensive. If you reduce the supply of foreign cars where’s the pressure to maintain lower prices going to come from? And also, who even said US auto manufacturers were having difficulty selling cars? The biggest thing stopping people from buying new cars is the cost. Which this will affect prices in the opposite direction. The success of foreign made cars in the 1980s also lead to vast improvements in American reliability as they needed to compete. I’m all on board with Trump on immigration, but you people are incapable of calling balls and strikes. Just admit when he’s wrong. If he blows up the economy, then we’ll get stuck with another democrat who will lock things down once and for all and undo all Trump’s progress. This all needs to be sustainable or it will have been for nothing.
- There’s only 5 cars made in China and sold in the US. Quite frankly the car industry isn’t competing with China because we already can’t get their fucking cars here. I wish for once we could actually get some competition within the Auto industry. Like change EPA emission requirements, let’s cars be made cheaper in the US by removing federal mandates for emissions and for safety. Like to be completely honest I’d rather have a sheet metal small hatch back like those from the 80’s that get 60 mpg for the cost of a slice of bread if it means I don’t get as many air bags or crumple zones or heaven forbid the touch screen for the mandated back up camera, I’d buy one. Allow the manufacturer to experiment and see what the market likes. It wasn’t the lack of interest that killed the Ford Ranger for 12 years. It was the EPA emissions and now the new Ford Ranger is the size of the old 2004 Ford F150.
- Canada buys more vehicles from american companies than it makes by about 500 000 units a year. The trade surplus between the two countries can be completley negated by canada not selling america oil& gas at a tremendous discount (which america than marks up and sells to many other countries) canada had some problems and one of them may have been using its neighbour as a main trading partner because america is always gonna spread democracy
