A newly discovered piece of music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, titled Ganz kleine Nachtmusik (meaning “Very Little Night Music”), was recently found in a German library. This work is believed to have been composed in Mozart’s teenage years, sometime in the mid-to-late 1760s, and consists of seven miniature movements for a string trio. It lasts around 12 minutes.
Interestingly, the manuscript isn’t in Mozart’s handwriting but is thought to be a copy made around 1780. The discovery adds a new layer to Mozart’s known body of work, particularly as it challenges the notion that young Mozart primarily composed keyboard music and symphonies. Some speculate that Mozart may have composed this piece for his sister, Maria Anna, as a personal memento Artnet News and All That’s Interesting
