In the recent Virginia primary election, both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump emerged as winners for their respective parties, setting the stage for a potential rematch of the 2020 election this November.
Biden won the Democratic primary shortly after the polls closed at 7 p.m., and Trump was declared the winner of the Republican primary about 30 minutes later. However, votes are still being counted across the state.
As voters went to the polls on Super Tuesday, many were thinking about the U.S. economy, which has been a major issue. According to a CBS News poll, almost 60% of voters think the economy under Biden is not doing well, despite some positive signs like strong GDP growth and low unemployment. Before the pandemic, the economy was doing pretty well, but after the pandemic started, there were a lot of problems like labor shortages and high inflation.
Economists say that presidents often get too much credit or blame for the economy, which goes through natural ups and downs. The economy was really strong from 2017 to 2019, before the pandemic hit, with low unemployment and steady growth. This period is often compared to the more challenging economic times after the pandemic.
In the Democratic Party, Biden beat two other candidates, Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson. Some voters chose one of Biden’s opponents as a protest vote, especially because of Biden’s support for Israel during the recent conflict in Gaza.
On the Republican side, Trump is leading against Nikki Haley in Massachusetts, and it’s not clear if she’ll get enough support to win any delegates there. Super Tuesday was a key day in the primary contests, with a lot of delegates up for grabs, but it seems like Biden and Trump are the clear favorites in their parties.
In Massachusetts, voters didn’t seem too excited about their choices, and turnout was expected to be lower than in previous years. Many people are feeling disillusioned about how the general election is shaping up.
