On MSNBC, authors Thomas Schaller, a political science professor, and Paul Waldman, a journalist, discussed their book “White Rural Rage: The Threat to American Democracy.” They described white rural voters in America as posing a significant challenge to democracy, labeling them as the most racist, xenophobic, and anti-democratic group in the country. Schaller mentioned their tendency towards conspiracy theories like QAnon and election denialism, and their skepticism towards democracy, including a disbelief in free speech and an independent press. He also noted their inclination towards white nationalism and justifying violence over peaceful discourse.
Waldman suggested that these voters’ support for former President Trump might stem from economic hardships, such as the loss of manufacturing jobs in rural areas, leaving them feeling neglected by the system. The discussion highlighted these voters’ frustration and anger towards both political parties, with Trump acting as a channel for their discontent.
Critics, including political commentator Jenna Ellis and a TikToker, expressed concern over the portrayal of rural voters, emphasizing the struggles they face, such as the opioid crisis, rather than being a threat to democracy. Christopher Rufo, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, critiqued the book’s title for lack of creativity. The rest of us are critical of the book for the attitudes it has overall. Only the product of the Left can be so misguided. Awaken with JP as usual does a great job mocking it all. And he gets away with it even on YouTube as he says things in such a way that his sarcasm beats the censors.
The book and its promotion on MSNBC have sparked a debate about the characterization of white rural voters and the broader implications for American democracy.
