Intuitive Machines’ Odysseus spacecraft successfully completed an historic moon landing. There were no immediate updates on the lander’s condition. It marks the first US moon landing in 52 years and the first ever Moon landing by a private company. Another company gave it a shot last month, but never made it to the moon, and the lander crashed back to Earth.
It’s a 7 day mission, as after 7 days the battery is expected to die out and then the instruments will freeze. But in 7 days it can operate and do as designed.
- Houston-based Intuitive Machines successfully landed its Odysseus robot near the lunar south pole.
- There was initial uncertainty after landing, but a signal confirming the craft’s presence on the Moon was eventually received.
- Flight director Tim Crain confirmed that their equipment was transmitting from the Moon’s surface, leading to celebrations among the staff.
- This landing marks a significant moment for both commercial space exploration and the US space program.
- Intuitive Machines ended the United States’ 50-year hiatus from lunar surface missions since the last Apollo mission in 1972.
- NASA had equipped Odysseus with six scientific instruments, highlighting the importance of this mission.
- NASA Administrator Bill Nelson hailed the landing as a “triumph” and emphasized the achievement of a commercial company leading such a mission.
- Technical challenges were overcome using experimental lasers from NASA, which helped establish communication with the lander.
- Odysseus landed at 23:23 GMT, initially without a signal, causing concern, but eventually confirmed to be upright and transmitting data, including images.
