SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy launches from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, flying a mission that is bound for a distant asteroid, on Friday. Targeting the asteroid Psyche, the eponymous NASA mission aims to fly a spacecraft on a journey of almost six years and about 2.2 billion miles, arriving at the planetary body in July 2029. NASA plans to study the composition of the asteroid.

Falcon Heavy has deployed NASA’s Psyche spacecraft. SpaceX‘s Falcon Heavy has now launch successfully eight times. NASA engineers at JPL will now listen for the first signals from Psyche, as it runs through automated procedures to deploy solar arrays and stabilize itself. – Stephen Clark

SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy has launched the NASA Psyche spacecraft to the 16 Psyche heavy-metal asteroid. It will take nearly six years to traverse 4 billion kilometers to its target using an ion thruster, arriving in August 2029, where it will enter orbit around the potato-shaped object some 280 kilometers wide at its longest point.
