I once took an industrial training course on some equipment that my company used. TWA (which was bought by American) used the same equipment at their nearby overhaul base and had some of their employees there. During a break I was visiting with the TWA employees. They told me that the jet engines need to be overhauled after a fixed number of hours of operation unless they indicate trouble. They said that there was an engine which was scheduled to be overhauled and had never given them any trouble. When they disassembled the engine one of the bearing races had disintegrated and the bearings fell out on the ground. Scary.
