The Healing Power of Backyard Wildlife: Health Benefits of Feeding Birds and Squirrels

For millions of Americans, especially seniors, filling a bird feeder or scattering nuts for squirrels is more than a simple pastime—it’s a daily ritual that brings joy, purpose, and measurable health improvements. Many report that doctors recommend this low-effort activity for its mental and physical perks, and research increasingly backs these anecdotal claims.

Mental Health Boost: Stress Reduction and Mood Enhancement

Feeding and watching birds and squirrels provides powerful stress relief. Studies show that observing birds (or even hearing them) can improve mental wellbeing for up to eight hours, benefiting people with and without depression.

This activity promotes mindfulness by shifting focus to the present moment—the antics of squirrels chasing each other or birds at a feeder. It lowers cortisol levels, reduces anxiety, and eases negative thought patterns. For seniors facing isolation or routine monotony, it creates a calming “nature reset” that distracts from worries and fosters feelings of connection and fulfillment.

Research from the University of Exeter and others links higher bird abundance in neighborhoods to lower rates of depression, anxiety, and stress. Similar restorative effects come from watching squirrels, whose playful behaviors offer entertainment and a sense of nurturing.

Many seniors describe it as “cheaper than therapy,” with surveys indicating that a large majority feel better mentally after starting regular feeding.  I’ve been feeding squirrels and birds foir years. I started when I still lived in Frisco Texas, and now I do the same here in Hollywood Florida.  I had one squirrel that I fed for years, same one… so damn cute. It even let me pet it.  Here are the brands I have used… with Pennington being the favorite that the critters seem to love the most. Except for smaller birds.  Then get the second choice below it.  Great on price and they love it.

Physical Health Advantages: Gentle Activity and Better Vital Signs

Bird and squirrel feeding encourages light physical activity—refilling feeders, maintaining stations, or walking short distances outdoors. For seniors, this gentle movement helps maintain mobility, balance, and cardiovascular health without high impact.

Spending time outdoors, even on a porch, provides fresh air, sunlight for Vitamin D, and opportunities for mild exercise. Studies associate nature exposure, including birdwatching, with lower blood pressure and reduced stress hormones.

It also supports cognitive health by stimulating memory (identifying species), attention, and problem-solving, potentially helping slow cognitive decline.

Social and Emotional Connections

This hobby often becomes social—sharing sightings with neighbors, family, or through apps and clubs. It combats loneliness, a major issue for seniors, and builds a sense of purpose through caring for wildlife.

Feeding creates a reliable routine that gives structure to days and a feeling of contribution to the ecosystem.

Responsible Practices for Maximum Benefits

While benefits are clear, feed responsibly to avoid risks like disease spread among animals or dependency. Use quality seed, clean feeders regularly, and provide varied foods. For squirrels, offer appropriate nuts sparingly to complement their natural diet. Consult local wildlife guidelines.

A Simple, Accessible Joy

Feeding birds and squirrels stands out as an easy, affordable way for Americans—particularly seniors—to enhance health. Doctors and researchers increasingly recognize its value as a form of “nature therapy” that improves mood, reduces stress, supports gentle activity, and fosters connection.

Whether from a window or garden bench, these small interactions with wildlife deliver outsized rewards for body and mind. Consider this a cheap investment in your health. Time away from the TV and computer screens, and in nature a little, getting some fresh air and helping your whole state of being.  – Mike Anthony

New Book from Whatfinger’s Own: “Time’s Orphans” – A Must-Read for Every Patriot

Folks, if you’ve been with Whatfinger from the beginning — back when we were calling out the lies, fighting the woke mind virus, and standing up for truth while the mainstream media sold their souls — then I’ve got something special for you.

“Time’s Orphans” – Book 1 of the Medieval Future Series — written by our own Michael Anthony — just dropped on Amazon.

This isn’t some generic sci-fi novel. This is our story.

  • Whatfinger crew members (Beth, Ben, Pat, and others) are on Elon Musk’s first Ark, carrying humanity’s last hope across the stars.
  • Elon himself is in it — the man who actually built the damn thing.
  • Trump gets the respect he deserves as the leader who fought for America when it mattered most.
  • The crew makes the hard calls patriots understand: protecting the future, rejecting the lies of Big Pharma, and refusing to let the next generation be destroyed by the same evil we watched unfold on Earth.

The immortals on the Ark vote to hide the truth about resets so their children will actually have families and build something worth fighting for. They carry the weight of that decision across centuries… only to reach a new world full of dragons, ancient secrets, and the same old human struggles between freedom and tyranny.

It’s packed with everything we stand for:

  • Unapologetic truth-telling
  • Love of real America
  • Rage against the machine that lied to us about the vax and everything else
  • Hope that humanity can still build something great even after the fall

If you’ve ever wanted to see a story where the good guys are the ones who backed Trump, backed Musk, backed free speech, backed real science over corporate lies, and refused to bow to the globalist reset — this book is for you.

Time’s Orphans is the beginning of something big. A series that blends hard sci-fi with epic future history, written by one of our own.

Leave a review if you love it. Share it with your friends. Let’s push this one up the charts and show the establishment that real Americans are still creating, still fighting, and still dreaming big.

The fight continues — even among the stars.

Book II goes serious Game of Thrones style with even more politics, America love…. Surely will be destroyed by the Left in comments/reviews once we advertise the books. – Mike
