Texas base building permits for a new single-family home are typically $1,000–$3,000. Impact and development fees average under $1,000 per unit San Francisco planned on spending $1.7 million to build a public toilet, after extreme backlash online they were able to build it for around $200,000 and it’s now open

• Some Americans emphasize immigration as to why homes are unaffordable. I’m not saying it’s not a factor. But a minor factor compared to others: – Permits – Inspection – Fees – Taxes – Inflation – Corporate ownership – Overdue market correction – Investor speculation – Reconquis.
• This is nothing new in California, I worked 47 years in the home building industry there and these outrageous “taxes” (what they really are) started going into effect in the late 1970’s and have ballooned ever since. This is my favorite courtesy of Sacramento Democrats… The California mandated solar for new homes (Title 24) adds roughly $10,000 to over $20,000+ to the initial cost of construction for a typical single-family home as of 2025/2026. It’s such outrageous a cost that builders have to offer leasing on it instead of including it in the mortgage. This is insane. But… you folks just go on with your continual re-election of Democrats. Soon nothing will be remotely affordable nor attainable there.
• Yep. I have a friend whose late parents wanted to gift him 2 acres off of their 42 acre off-grid property. He was going to build a home there, so he could take care of them. El Dorado county. 50K for an above ground septic / with permit 50K for the sheriff’s office 50K for schools 50K for environmental impact study and….
